CIEH Level 1 Award in Food Safety

Course Suitability

The CIEH Level 1 Award in Food Safety is suitable for a variety of candidates, including new employees with minimal or no prior food safety knowledge, employees handling low-risk or wrapped food, those who work front-of-house, such as waiting or check out staff, as well as those working back-of-house such as kitchen porters or warehouse staff.

The Level 1 Award in Food Safety provides a quick, concise and practical starting point from which more detailed training can be undertaken, with more advanced training available through the CIEH Level 2 Award in Food Safety.

Training Overview

The Level 1 Award in Food Safety is sector specific and the training course has been developed to allow courses to be tailored to meet the needs of staff working in catering, manufacturing or retail environments. Those successfully completing the course will be awarded a qualification appropriate to their working environment:

  • CIEH Level 1 Award in Food Safety Awareness in Catering
  • CIEH Level 1 Award in Induction into Food Safety for Manufacturing
  • CIEH Level 1 Award in Food Safety Awareness for Retail

Course Content

The Level 1 Food Safety course is designed to make candidates aware of the key health and safety issues and the part that they should play in keeping themselves and others free from harm in the workplace.

The training course will cover the following topics:

  • Food Safety - food hygiene, hazards, responsibilities
  • Personal Hygiene
  • Cleaning
  • Contamination

Assessment

The Food Safety Level 1 Award is knowledge-based and will be assessed by means of an external assessment. Each unit is marked by means of a 15 question, multiple choice examination.

Course Duration

The CIEH Level 1 Award in Food Safety is run as a half day training course.
